Resume Tips
MLIS programs really want to see how you present yourself as a professional, not if you’re already qualified to be a librarian! MLIS programs source their application requirements based on this. Be sure to list your bachelor’s degree near the top of the resume followed by any work experience. Indeed, any previous customer service experience looks excellent! As a librarian, you deal with the public to some extent. Therefore, list any relevant volunteer experience or experience working with others in your resume.
MLIS Application Requirements
Although the application requirements for every MLIS program are not exactly the same, there are some general rules that you will find among most MLIS programs:
- GPA Requirement – Generally speaking, MLIS programs recommend a mimimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 to 3.25. However, if your GPA is a little lower, don’t fret! Some programs may overlook a lower GPA in lieu of extracurricular activities, stellar letters of recommendation, or related experience.
- GRE Scores – Increasingly, GRE scores are not needed for admission into graduate programs (including MLIS programs). However, if you have a lower GPA, you may want to contact your school of choice to see if a good GRE score can improve your chances of admission.
- Resume – Some MLIS programs require a resume with the application. Please don’t be intimidated by this; you are applying for library school, not to be a librarian!
- Letters of Recommendation – Most programs require three letters or recommendation from someone who knows your academic or professional qualifications. Previous supervisors and professors that you have worked closely with are excellent choices. If you have any experience in a library setting (even in a volunteer capacity), that supervisor’s recommendation could be instrumental in getting you into the program.
- Essay – A written statement in the form of a essay is commonly required. This written statement is usually 500 to 1000 words and mainly used to see if you will be a good fit for the program. Please visit our Essay Help page for tips on writing this statment.
