David Waxman and Sergey Gavrilets 2004 "20 questions on adaptive dynamics"
J. of Evolutionary Biology
Abstract
The modern developments of Adaptive Dynamics are reviewed in 20 questions.
The questions cover the derivation of the fitness functions used in Adaptive
Dynamics, fitness gradients, pairwise invasibility plots, singular points
and evolutionary branching. We relate Adaptive Dynamics to alternative
approaches including population genetics and evolutionarily stable
strategies. We question some of the fundamental assumptions underlying
Adaptive Dynamics and enquire into what Adaptive Dynamics has taught us
about polymorphism, assortative mating and sympatric speciation. We conclude
that Adaptive Dynamics provides a set of useful approximations for studying
various evolutionary questions. However, as with any approximate method,
the
conclusions based on Adaptive Dynamics are valid only under certain
conditions.
